Plan a perfect wedding

step 1) find someone nice to spend the rest of your life with and make really really sure you want to marry them!!!
step 2) read everything below.

But seriously - here's some help and advice on your wedding photography and video so you're clear about what we do, and some suggestions to help you create a stress free day of fulfillment and fun.

in October 2006 ...
I'm on job number 1014, the majority of them weddings. In that time I've seen things that work brilliantly as well as some that don't. I specialise in making photo-biographies of one of life's major milestones. It's fun and hectic and emotions are usually running high, particularly to begin with. This is completely normal so don't worry about it..

don't rush...
I'm always seeing people 'stampede' through their wedding in a terrible hurry. It's because they're often afraid their guests will be bored, understandably so when photographers spend two or more hours bossing people about outside a church and make them late for dinner. These days it doesn't often happen, if you follow these guidelines (and book me) I guarantee it won't.

guests - not even slightly bored

Why not get married earlier and have a garden party with canapés, Pimms, Bucks Fizz, croquet, crazy golf, caricaturist, treasure hunt etc and spend a couple of hours having fun with every one before the meal? They'll all have a fab time with you at your wedding and I'll get amazing pictures of you all having it.

posed / directed photographs...
I'll shoot loads of candid documentary style pictures of you and your guests having a great time, most of them without you ever knowing I've taken them. Then there are a few directed photographs. The list below is what I shoot when left to my own devices.

Groom and B Man
Groom, B man and ushers
Bride with B maids and father
Signing the register
Coming down the aisle (candid)
B&G with anyone related to the bride
B&G with anyone related to the groom
B&G with anyone who hasn't been in one yet
B&G with her parents
B with her mother
B&G with his parents
B&G with all parents
B&G with B'maids, ushers and B man
B with B maids
Some shots with B&G
Everyone from above (where possible)

Some of these pictures are taken before the service or ceremony, some after. Generally it's the 'after' bit everyone dreads and it should take about 20 minutes max. Allow another hour at the very least for you to socialise and have fun as this is when you get to enjoy yourselves - and I get all those magical candid shots.

Please feel free to edit this list...
down if you wish or there may be two or three you'd like to add, but please don't draw up a list of specific groups of named people. It takes ages to round them up and everyone gets horribly bored. Also whilst I'm finding people for group shots I'm not capturing the spirit of your day

take your time and have fun with your wedding day
group shots don't have to be 'starchy'

some suggestions...
If you keep the directed shots to the wedding party only and shoot the rest candidly, you free up a lot of time to socialise. You're going to have all your friends and family all want to speak to you and congratulate you all at once. If you have, let's say 90 guests, imagine how long that'll take and how quickly that time will go.

If you choose to shoot posed pictures of the wedding party only, having the guests leave via another door whilst the wedding party do the family pictures gets it over very quickly. They'll be done by the time everyone else has filed out - takes about 10 mins.

One word of caution with this though, there may be one or two people who aren't so keen on having their picture taken or who disappear off somewhere and aren't in many pictures, or they manage to avoid me altogether. One shot of everyone from above should ensure you've got them all.

Speeches...
before the meal can let the speakers get it over with and actually enjoy dinner. It also works well to do them in the garden half an hour before sitting down as it gathers everyone into one place. Photographically, speeches are a good time to get candids of people listening, or laughing at the Best Man's character assination of the Groom!

a suggested itinerary...
(civil ceremony)
11.30am
some shots of the mayhem of girls getting ready, rollers and tee-shirts, glasses of bubbly / boys having a drink at the pub, guests arriving etc.
1.00pm
The wedding
1.30 - 3.00m
people congratulating, throwing confetti, hugging, kissing, wishing you well, canapés, champagne, Pimms and family pictures.
3.00 - 5.30pm
The wedding breakfast and speeches
5.30 - 7.00pm
Chill out with a jazz band in the garden and games on the lawn, strolling in the sunshine, sitting and chatting...
7.00 - late pm
party the night away with a barbeque about 8.30pm

wedding day hats!

When working out timings...
work backwards from your 1st dance. Here're some basic rules of thumb on how long things take.

Civil ceremony with two readings 25 mins
C of E service 45 mins
Catholic without mass 1 hour
Catholic with mass 1.5 hours
Meal and speeches 2.5 hours
preparing function room 1 hour

and finally - live happily ever after...

Stages of payment...
on booking I ask for a deposit of 25% of the price of your package. 2 - 3 weeks after the wedding your proofs will be ready and the full balance is payable. Choose your images, albums etc and return the order to me for completion.

The price of your package is guaranteed for 12 months from the wedding date. It's human nature to delay choosing and suppliers change their prices from time to time, so if you're over a year making your choice you may incur a small surcharge if they do.

If you have any questions please feel free to call us...
