How to plan a wedding

Step 1 - find someone nice to spend the rest of your life with and make really really sure you want to marry them!!!
Step 2 - read everything below.

But seriously - here's some planning tips to help you have a brilliant day.

bride and bridesmaid

Making sure no-one gets bored ...
Usually the only boring part of a wedding is if the photographer has everyone standing about for ages. Check to see how long they want.

Realistically a standard set of pose pics like the list below shouldn't take more than twenty minutes provided everyone's there and they come when called.

  • Assign someone to help round everyone up
  • keep the shot list generic rather than name specific because it turns everyone off to hear lists of names being called out.
  • Serve drinks and canapés during the posed pictures

Bride and Groom

My recommended posed / directed photographs ...
The generic shot list below should take twenty minutes max and is what I do when left to my own devices. I also take loads of pics which you won't notice me doing plus candid shots of everyone having fun after the posed part is finished.

  • Groom and B Man
  • Groom, B man and ushers
  • Bride with B maids and father
  • Signing the register
  • Coming down the aisle (candid)
  • B&G with anyone related to the bride
  • B&G with anyone related to the groom
  • B&G with anyone who hasn't been in one yet
  • B&G with her parents
  • B with her mother
  • B&G with his parents
  • B&G with all parents
  • B&G with B'maids, ushers and B man
  • B with B maids
  • Some shots with B&G
  • Everyone from above (where possible)

Some of these pictures are taken before the service or ceremony, some after. This list isn't written in stone and if you choose me as your wedding photographer I'll go through everything with you to make sure I do want you want me to.

If you want to visit special locations or do some more creative portraits - remember allow extra time to do it in.

How about a wedding tea party?

Give yourselves time to enjoy your wedding ...
For you two the day will flash past in an instant - so take some time to enjoy it. You're spending loads of money to bring together the people you want around you to celebrate - so make time to enjoy the party...

  • Get married earlier and have a garden party
  • Canapés, Pimms, Bucks Fizz, croquet, crazy golf, caricaturist, treasure hunt etc. all help break the ice.
  • Mingle and have fun with every one between the photos and the meal. If you've got eighty guests and spend only a minute with each one - that's an hour and twenty minutes!

If you're in a pleasant location and people have a drink and nibbles and some silly games to play they'll have a fantastic time - and so will you.

It also gives your photographer time to capture all the magic candid moments.

How long things take ...
To work out what time to have your wedding ceremony work backwards from your 1st dance. Don't forget to allow travel time between venues plus an extra five minutes at each end for people who've stopped to chat in the car park.

Here're some basic rules of thumb on how long things take to help you work it out

  • Civil ceremony with two readings 25 mins
  • C of E wedding with three hymns 45 mins
  • Catholic wedding without mass 1 hour
  • Catholic wedding with mass 1.5 hours
  • Posed photography as per list opposite 20 mins
  • Having fun with guests 1 hour (at least)
  • Line ups usually take between twenty minutes and half an hour depending on numbers
  • Meal and speeches 2.5 hours
  • Changing the dining room round for the band / disco 1hour

some suggestions...
If you keep the directed shots to the wedding party only and shoot the rest candidly, you free up a lot of time to socialise.

You're going to have all your wedding guests want to speak to you and congratulate you all at once. If you have, 90 guests, imagine how long that'll take and how quickly that time will go.

If you choose to shoot posed pictures of the wedding party only, having the guests leave church via a side door whilst the wedding party do the family pictures gets it over very quickly - usually takes 10 mins.

One word of caution - some people may not get in any pictures if you shoot everything candidly, especially shy people who hate being photographed.

However one shot of everyone from above should ensure you've got them all.

Speeches...
Doing speeches before the meal lets the speakers get it over with and relax. If it's a nice day - why not do them outside in the garden?

Speeches are a perfect opportunity for your photographer to get candids of people listening, or laughing as the Best Man assassinates the Groom's character!

Groom and his mum - ahhh!

a suggested itinerary...
11.30am
some shots of the mayhem of girls getting ready, rollers and tee-shirts, glasses of bubbly / boys having a drink at the pub, guests arriving etc.
1.00pm
The wedding
1.30 - 3.00m
people congratulating, throwing confetti, hugging, kissing, wishing you well, canapés, champagne, Pimms and family pictures.
3.00 - 5.30pm
The wedding breakfast and speeches
5.30 - 7.00pm
Chill out with a jazz band in the garden and games on the lawn, strolling in the sunshine, sitting and chatting...
7.00 - late pm
party the night away with a barbeque about 8.30pm

and finally - live happily ever after...
